hello, darlings!
I am sooooooooooooooooooo excited about this upcoming weekend! My father's side of the family is having their annual reunion in upstate New York. Normally I hate family things. When you are a woman, you get guilted into attending all of those godawful baby and wedding showers.
I skip out on all of them. I can't think of anyone who likes to see family at funerals. If you live a distance away from your family, then those are usually the times you see them. you know?
A little about my background: I am exactly half Sicilian and exactly half Colombian. Each side of the family has traced our ancestry back hundreds of years to find that until we came to America, each side married only the same nationality. big deal. I do like that my father's family can be traced back to Spain colonizing South America. My great great etc etc grandfather was a Knight given our name. That is why we can't trace it back any further. I believe the castle with his name is still preserved!!!!
Anyway, Americans get critcized a lot for being uncultured. That is simply not true. I know a whole bunch about my family. We don't go parading it around or anything but, we are very proud of our background. This is where the reunion comes into play. Each year, the week before thanksgiving, the entire side of my father's family gets together. We all live all over the place and some relatives even live out of the country. This really is th only time we see the majority of us. My dad is the youngest of 11 children, so you could imagine the amount of cousins I have. We all bring some kickass Colombian food and thanksgiving type food and celebrate a day of our own. I love this!!! Last year, I brought some liquor from the Spanish specialty market. This year, I will be cooking some empanadas. *crosses fingers*
I love the company most of all. I do not get along with my mom's family. I don't do guilt, expectations, or gossip. They are old fashioned and are critical that I went to college and am female. That's another story. But my dad's family is incredible. I love to hear the stories, discuss recipes, catch up on our lives. If I don't see someone for years, it feels strangely fine to have a conversation like we hung out last week. See? We are close, but not. I do love and miss all of them and their friendly faces. Some of my aunts don't speak English and just give me bigs hugs and tell me I love you. I feel at home with my family and that's what it's all about.
Em and I are going to have a wonderful time. I am going to try and get her to say something in spanish to impress everyone. haha. yeah right. I better get brushing up myself so I could understand half my relatives.
until next time,
Te quiero, todo el tiempo,
Schoolgirl
