I have been asked this question quite a bit lately.
Scientist? What kind?
I am an analyst. I use chromatography and olfactory evaluation to study fragrances. check a bottle of perfume or lotion for the ingredients. See the one called fragrance? I know exactly what is in there. We make the bath and body works, estee lauder frags, soaps, victoria's secret, candles, eliz arden, body shop, high end stuff only. pretty proud of my company. I love playing with formulas.
I smell for a living. I read chromatography peaks. I tell people when they screw up. I claim responsiblity for raw materials to make the frags. I approve what goes to the store. I say how to make it better and conform. compounding must be done correctly or reactions can go badly. I work using company guidelines such as no animal prods, no gmo, no european unregulated items, no cheap up to par stuff.
Olfactory evaluationis a learned skill. not everyone can do it. i am still learning and will forever. I will be training to be a perfumer someday, my dream. I need eight years of training for that. This is where your chemistry comes in more than ever. the reactions and properties of each raw material must marry up for stability and time. and of course odor that has a purpose.
chemistry geek. by the way, I absolutely work for a company that does not test on animals.
My other passion and first line of work was precious metals analyst. materials science for Platinum, palladium, rhodium, gold, ruthenium, etc... I know how your catalytic converter works and why it is so expensive to replace. And how good jewelry purity really is.
Now that I bored you, strange fact about myself: I cannot have sex with my feet uncovered.
have a great weekend.
