Project update: The 79 Trans AM.
This morning I put in a call to Lunati. I talked with them about my engine and what I was wanting to run. I finally settled on a cam. It is going to be # 507A1LUN coupled with my Edelbrock heads, Solid Roller lifters, and Harland Sharp 1.6:1 ratio roller rockers Desk Top Dyno says that this engine should make a peak 397 HP @ 4000 RPM with 535 FT/LBS of torque These numbers may seem off to some, but this is a Ponitac 455 which is an excelent Torque engine. Horsepower being somewhat of a misleading number, if you look closely you can see what a potent engine this is going to be.
The Power table works out to as follows.
RPM HP Torque
2000 186 487
2500 243 510
3000 299 523
3500 356 535
4000 390 512
4500 397 464
5000 376 395
5500 343 328
As you can see this engine has a broad flat torque band that never drops below 328 ft/lbs of torque. For those of you that are unfamiliar with what a torque rating is, it is the mechanical twisting force generated by an engine measured in Foot Pounds pressure.
Or in other words this puppy will pull and pull hard.
Also the olds is coming along well, I have to run down in the morning and talk to my body man and see what he has to say as far as painting the body goes.
As well It looks like I am going to go with the Dick Miller Bulldog heads.
Right now the power table on this engine is looking like:
RPM HP Torque
2000 213 560
2500 272 570
3000 327 572
3500 379 568
4000 413 542
4500 435 508
5000 434 456
5500 409 390
6000 366 320
As you can see this puppy peaks at 435 HP @ 4500 RPM and 572 ft/lbs of torque @ 3000 RPM yet another torque monster.
I cant wait till this spring, the olds is the car I am taking on the hotrod power tour.
