Only in America is big not big enough. I mean the bigger better deal, is that not the American dream? I mean big macks, Biggie Fries, Big Foot, America is obsessed with big. Well My friends I am taking big to a whole new level. And what better to do it with than with somthing as all American as a 1911 auto pistol!

A few weeks ago I had the distinct pleasure of shooting my uncle's 10mm Kimber 1911 pistol. I was extreemly impressed with this ammunition and decided right then and there that I want one for myself!

The Concept:
Take a standard Para Ordanance 1911 .45 14+1 round frame, and install a .40 S&W slide with a custom barrel fitted for 10mm ammunition.

Pictured here is the start gun, the Para ordinance 1911 "Colonel" 14+1 round 1911 HI-CAP Auto Pistol.

My intension is to run 180 grain JHP ammunition loaded to the original Norma specifications. This round fires with a velocity of 1350 feet per second! That is a great deal faster than a 230 GR .45 ACP which travels at 820 FPS! or for you avid number cruncers out there that means that this round flies at 530 feet per second faster than the .45 ACP or 1.646 times as fast! Now that is zinging!

Or a good comparison is that a .45 strikes with 495 ft/lbs pressure at 25 yards, the 10mm strikes with 728 ft/lbs that is 233 ft/lbs more energy smacking into the target per round, Or 1.47 times the power.

Now the goodie part. Ass Kicking potential:

If you lay the 2 pistols side by side this is how they compare-

The .45 ACP holds 14+1 rounds of 230 GR JHP ammunition. that is 3450 grains of bullet. Hitting with the combined force of 7425 ft/lbs

The 10mm holds 16+1 rounds of 180 GR JHP's that is 3060 grains of bullet. With a hitting force of 12,376 ft/lbs.

So the .45 carries 390 grains more bullet but the 10mm hits with 4,591 more combined ft/lbs of force. In other words the 10mm could have done 1.667 times more damage than the .45 in 2 more trigger pulls!

Now just to showcase the true signifigance of this gun, I am going to do the same comparison to a 9mm.

Para Ordanance offeres a 9mm 18+1 round pistol. A standard 9mm load is a 115 grain JHP. This round travels at 1300 fps with 432 ft/lb of musle energy.

Again the 10mm 180 grain JHP ammunition loaded to the original Norma specifications. This round fires with a velocity of 1350 feet per second.

The combined 18+1 round 9mm comes out to 2185 grains of bullet with a combined force of 8208 ft/lbs The 10mm holds 16+1 rounds of 180 GR JHP's that is 3060 grains of bullet. With a hitting force of 12,376 ft/lbs.

Meaning that the 10mm holds 875 grains more bullet hitting at 4168 ft/lbs more or 1.508 times the pressure the 9mm hits with. In 2 less trigger pulls! Now say it with me "HOOZ YER DADDY!"

The 10mm is actually the father of the .40 S&W what a .40 S&W is is a 10mm casing cut down to the leingth of a 9mm. The cool thing is is that it means that the majority of .40 S&W pistol parts are interchangeable with the 10mm

Now here is the cool part. The para ordanance holds 14 rounds of .45 ACP well the 10mm being a slightly slimmer round, you can stact 16 of them in the same magizone!

As I am sure you all can tell by now I am very excited with this project, I am finding that it should prove to be a very cool gun. If the results are favorable, I may move on to doing the same with the new Para Ordanance PDX LDA Carry 12 that I just bought. It is a 12+1 round 3.5" barrel concealed carry model, Quite the gun.

Shiver me timbers this is going to be fun! ARRR!!!

Oh and on a final note, this is a very large and powerful round that I am shooting. If you are an inexperenced shootist I by no means recomend that you shoot it. As well if you are a smaller framed person I do not recomend that you do so either. This weapon packs a huge deal of destrucive force and should only be handled by an experenced shootist with the body mass to support such a large round. If you are a smaller person, there is nothing wrong with sticking to the 9mm or the .380 Dont let anyone tell you thier macho crap about how you need to be shooting a biger round, shoot what your comforable with, and if your not comforable with guns, then dont shoot at all. Be safe, it is no fun if you or one of your friends doesnt get to go home. It does not matter what the round is, it can kill you. I am simply a fand of the bigger badder fuckerupers. Now I will get off my soap box. surreal

On the one hand, the thought of shooting a gun is fascinating. On the other... I doubt I could do it. I cannot shake the belief that guns are meant for causing descruction, pain and death. Of course the bearer is the one who decides what it's used for (people kill, not guns) but personally, I don't think I would be able to justify holding and shooting a gun unless I was planning to harm someone. And, that would onyl happen if a loved one was serious danger. Than again, I've never tried, so... maybe Im wrong.
