nah, griefing (high levels picking on lowbies) has become such a serious issue that most games write rules into their engines to keep it from happening. for WoW there are a ton... the main thing being guards. in every major city, and at the gates to the newb areas are uber high level guards who will hand you your ass if you try to head in and pick on the enemy faction's baby characters.
also coming in is an honor system, where players get penalized for making dishonourable kills. if you kill someone at your level or above, you gain status and respect and can eventually gain access to awesome stuff. if you kill someone weaker than you, you lose honor and end up with shitty penalties like having vendors ignore you and being open to cheap shots from your enemies.
also, there's the almighty Game Master asskicking threat from the blizzard admins, but that's usually only handed out to people who harass other players or exploit bugs.
plus, when the game goes to retail everyone has to start over, so you'll be on even footing at the start.

yep, pretty much all MMO's have monthly fees. the plus side to this is that since game sales usually cover the development costs, your dollars go straight to paying devs to create expansions and content updates. ten bucks a month can be a bit annoying, but i've never had cause to complain... one good batch of new rare items and quest zones will placate most people. for the harder to please, there are the major expansions, which are taken pretty literally in MMO's. they usually physically tack another continent onto the world, giving you a whole new playground.
I'm sorry you're in such a hard situation. but I'm glad you're there for your mom. it's important to know your family is there for you at hard times.
