I had the wonderful opportunity this week to spend some time in one of our centers in Philadelphia. Yes, when I say "wonderful" I am being completely sarcastic. The center is a complete mess. It seems that their director left without giving any notice, or actually ever doing any administrative work. Half the kids in the center aren't entered in the computer at all. Nor do many of them have a file with all their pertinent paperwork.
For the most part, I was playing Ms. Fix It. Fix the laminator. Fix the label maker. Fix the copier. The power went out in the Staff Lounge. And on and on and on.
Then I was the computer help. Print out the curriculum forms. Type a memo for the staff. Set up a template for the emergency response cards. on and on and on.
Lastly, I was filling in in the rooms. This is because almost no one in this center works there full time. The schedule is a badly balanced mish mosh of part time people which leaves huge gaps where there aren't enough people to maintain the child/caregiver ratios. It is a nightmare!
The center's one saving grace? The children are amazing! They are happy, playful, and so accustomed to new people coming and going that they will quickly make someone from the outside feel right at home. I love my job!
That was my week. How was yours?
