Hey all.
Today was election day in Canada. I am really afraid for my country, because it looks as though an ultra conservative government may be coming into power. That scares me more than I can ever fully express. That means, good-bye same sex marriage rights, that means good-bye fair health care. They want to privatize health care. Which means that we would still have free health care, but that doctor's would be allowed to set up private practices that charge for services. Essentially, this is for people who can afford to be priority patients, even if there is another person who is at risk, or has been on a waiting list before them.
It's not so much that that bothers me. It bothers me that Canadian's really believe that this won't affect free health care services. Here's the reason I know that it will.
What doctor's are NOT going to want to have private practices? More money...And I don't necessarily blame them. This privatization is supposed to be an iniciative to bring Canadian doctor's who have moved, to for instance, the U.S. in order to make more money, back to Canada.
What I can tell you will happen is this. For those of us (like me) who can't afford to pay to be a priority, there will be less access to basic health services, there will be fewer doctor's and hospital's will suffer greatly. All this, because people are being mislead to think that this will only improve wait times on services, being seen by GP's, being seen in emergency etc. I'm sorry that all my friends in the U.S. are already dealing with this. But I don't think anyone should have to. I still believe that health care is a right, not a priveledge. It's not a fucking business. It's a human right.
There. I'm done. Thanks for letting me rant.
Heaven help us.

cecelia:
Think snow angels, lovely. I feel the same way, no one should be denied of health care, that is awful. I hope it all works out. Keep smiling.
