Torture Garden
We regularly have to write reviews of photo exhibitions. The first one I did was "Portraits d'artistes", portraits of famous photographers of other artists, and self-portraits. It went from a daguerreotype by Duseigneur in the 19th century to Cindy Sherman, with also portraits of Dali, Warhol, the countess of Castiglione...
This time, it was a completely different story. "Torture Garden", by Perou. Photographer of Marylin Manson, David Beckham, Michael Nyman... Perou prefers the act of photographign to its result and works to openly represent the alternative and exuberant. Here, he portrayed customers of a London fetishist club, for the first time in 2001, then in 2004. He cares about humanizing the strange, trying to point out what similarities the viewers and the models have. Fetishism is but a way to escape their mind for a little while, an adult way of playing dress-up, when the eyes always betray.
