IZZY - 13/06/1975 - 11/06/2002
It's been three years since Izzy passed away in a motorcycle crash.
I just wanted to honour his memory here, after being at the cemetary to say hello to him. On his tombstone there's the most fitting epitaph ever "Your smile will always be with us". He was famous for one thing, after all: his smile. Always a good word for everyone, always up for a good time. His passions were music (he played the trumpet in the excellent skacore band Watertower) and joints. So the best place to meet him would be at a concert, while he was skinning up a joint
That's basically where i always met him, never seen him outside the music scene, but the first time i ever met him, he offered me a lift home and we chatted a lot and i introduced my best friend ga to his band, because they were in need of a drummer. ga fell in love with watertower, and i fell in love with watertower too.
he was a journalist too, his field was c-class soccer games reports on the local paper. the most infamous of his adventures was when he was attending a soccer match that was very boring, and in the mid-time break he met a friend at the stadium and they had a couple of joints, taking most of the second half of the game away. so he then returned for the last minutes of the game (still boring) and he then wrote his article on all he saw, quoting the result as 0-0 and saying the game was boring. too bad he missed TWO goals made while he was away. it wasstill a draw, but he reported totally the wrong results. he managed to get away with it anyway, and didn't get fired. probably cause he smiled some more at the editor, who knows.
the photo on his tombstone is looking more or less like the one i put up there, with a beer in hand and a look that says "hey, you've come to have fun too?". you walk to his final resting place in grief, and you end up seeing the pic and smiling and thinking "Che Pirla!".
may he be blessed.
what can you do to honour his memory? You can donwload and listen to a couple of Watertower mp3s (go on, you'll like them!), and listen to his trumpet:
Popolo
Il Pompiere (the band's greatest hit so far, it frequently plays on the radio and it's put on in punk-clubs!)
And you can even go on the band's guestbook and leave a message in english. the band will be surprised
thanks for reading through this. i think i am a lucky guy, and i haven't seen friends die or pass away or disappear, this is the closest i have ever got to it, and he was such a good guy, his world surely is a bit bleaker without him.

ps: now i am heading off to the gods of metal. i doubt izzy would enjoy any band playing there, but i'll think about him when slayer will play anyway!
ps2: this is me and him and the webmaster of the (ex)most-followed italian punksite, the night we all met for the first time ever.
