During the latest of an ongoing 'what is your next planned tattoo' debate, I mentioned wanting a collage of my favorite children's book illustrations.... to pay homage to my former career as well as my seriously geeky book fetish.... and I mentioned the book "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein... It is among my favorites, but I am a little wary of how the illustrations would translate onto skin, and would not want the entire progression of the story as a tattoo....

Which sparked the question: "Which drawing would you pick?"

Hmmm...

It was then that I realized... the drawing I pick will be a reflection of my outlook on life..... (don't laugh, its true)

Should I pick the widely recognized cover art, where the tree is giving an apple to the boy

an illustration from the boy's adolescence or adulthood.....where he selfishly takes whatever the tree will give,

or the ending, where the tree has nothing left to give, save companionship, which was all it ever wanted.

I am leaning more towards an illustration from when the boy is young, and he enjoys playing with the tree, before he is so unkind....

But I also love the bittersweet return of the old man, when the tree is has nothing left....

Hmmmmmm......................

that's a tough call... i like the implications of both and would have a really difficult time choosing one or the other... tho if you have the space, you could always do both in the same spot on opposite sides of your body, kind of like "bookends"...

he has companionship when he is young even though he doesnt realise till the end..
but what do we know when we are young?
no matter what age he is, he has the tree....
so i would go young..
i dont make any sense
