Why do I smoke? Why don't I smoke?
Somehow or another after a period of consistant enjoyment of our favorite cigaretts for over a month, I, by way of peculiar genes, retain the ability to start and stop smoking whenever the hell I want. Even after smoking a lot (by my standard) over a period of time, I can without struggle stop for an equal or longer period of time.
Why do I enjoy this? Among other things, it makes me socially transitory. If the people that I'm with do not smoke, I do not have to smoke. If the people I'm with smoke, I will join them in smoking.
As well, smoking gives you an excuse to excuse your from any room or situation. Whether it be class, a friends house, a party, or a discussion, you may simply indicate that you wish to smoke and because of your own politeness remove yourself from that room for any period of time ranging to 15 minutes. No one will question your decision.
Conversations revolving around a cigarette are inherently better than conversations around a bottle of booze. Whereas booze has the effect of turning you into a rambling idiot who is suddenly interested in being everyone's friend, cigarettes do not have this effect. You still know exactly who your friends are, exactly who they aren't, and exactly what you wish to speak with them about. But the act of smoking offers you a relaxed environment almost impervious to intrusion because of people's aversion to the smell of smoke (I cannot blame them). Some of my most wonderful discussion with my friends occur late at night after class around a few cigarettes, and I wouldn't give up those conversations for the world.
And that is why I do (or do not) smoke.
Oh, and because smoke is pretty when it wisps off a lit cigarette between my fingers.
