Hello everyone! This weeks SG blog homework is to share some fun facts about the city I live in. Well, as far as I'm concerned there is nothing interesting about my town whatsoever so I decided to do some digging. I live in Franklin Square, New York, a small suburb in Nassau County on Long Island. Upon doing a little research I was surprised to find that there actually is some interesting history of this small town! So let's get started! In 1790, George Washington passed through the town while touring Long Island. He wrote in his diary that the area was "entirely treeless except for a few scraggly fruit trees." (I wonder if this is where he found his cherry tree!) I also found that in the spring of 1840, Walt Whitman spent three months as the schoolmaster of the "Trimming Square" school district which is the area where Franklin Square, Garden City South, and West Hempstead intersect. This finding was really mind blowing to me because that area of "intersection" is literally a five minute walk from my house! Who would have known?! Now this right here is probably my favorite unknown fact... Franklin Square was the home of the Franklin National Bank which was once the nations 20th largest bank. The Franklin National Bank also introduced many banking innovations still used today such as: junior savings accounts (1947), the bank credit card, and the drive up teller window (1950). Also, a no-smoking policy on banking floors was instated in 1958. It's incredible the things you can find out if you just do a little research! In terms of pop-culture, JWoww from the hit MTV series "Jersey Shore" was also a resident of Franklin Square. I have to say that when I first saw the blog topic I was more than convinced that I would have nothing to say about my town but I'm glad I got to dig up a little dirt on Franklin Square! As per usual thank you to @missy, @rambo, and @lyxzen for keeping these blog topics interesting and also thanks to anyone who reads this! "The more you know!" THANKS FOR LETTING ME SHARE! xoxo Sarabi_
