Only in Hollywood...
Yesterday started like any other day. I was busy at work getting ready for a 200 gallon reaction, mixed acid, blah, blah, blah. Then, on my way home, I decided that I was pretty hungry and didn't feel like cooking so I called Dmuff and asked him if he wanted to go to Mel's (diner) with me.
The diner is walking distance from where we live, so Dmuff simply met me outside when I got home. As we were walking to the diner, we noticed quite a bit of activity on Hollywood Blvd. The street was blocked off, bleachers were filled, and a red carpet lined the street. It was the red carpet premier for Ocean's 13.
We went to the diner, ate, talked about our jobs, and decided to walk to Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf because I wanted to walk around for a bit to start recovering from my marathon this past Sunday.
Bad move. As we headed west on Hollywood Blvd, we soon found ourselves unable to move due to the size of the crowd gathered around to see the red carpet arrivals. We heard someone yell, "OMG, she came! It's Angelina!"
The crowd shifted just enough for Dmuff and I to move through it and make our way to Coffee Bean. On our way, we came across a "street performer" dressed as Jason from the Friday the 13th movies.
For those of you who don't frequent Hollywood Blvd, the "street performers" are simply random people who wear costumes and take pictures with the tourists for tips.
Anyway, Jason was rattling a big plastic knife on the back of the bleachers, set up for individuals with tickets to watch the red carpet arrivals. About four feet away from him, there was another guy, lying on the floor. He looked like he was asleep, and I told Dmuff something to the affect of, "Oh, what? Did Jason kill that guy?"
Now, those of you from the area know that there someone lying on the sidewalk next to a strange character on Hollywood Blvd is really nothing quite out of the ordinary.
Anyway, after coffee, we continued west on the same street so that I could use the ATM machine. We then started to make our return trip. On the way back, we saw a fire truck heading straight towards the blocked section of the street, and Dmuff and I made jokes about how a super fan probably burst into flames at the site of their favorite movie star and how the fire truck picked a really bad route to the emergency, considering the premier.
Within minutes, we were back by the Coffee Bean and decided to take pictures from across the street, where there were only about 20 people, to document what we had to walk through for a cup of coffee. Then we noticed the fire truck, now parked by an ambulance, and the "sleeping guy" being carried away on a stretcher.
Oops. I guess it really wasn't funny, but we couldn't stop laughing at our own stupidity (as well as most of the crowd's) for not realizing that the man was in need of medical attention.
I snapped a few pictures of the scene, and we got ready to head home.
Just then, we heard a man say, "Okay, don't push," and saw that he was handing something to the other people standing by us.
I said, "It's probably more of those coupons for Hollywood Tours that they always try to hand us when we walk through here."
We decided to check it out anyway, asked for two, and ended up with free passes to walk into the Kodak Theatre for the screening of Ocean's 13!! We were guided and walked right in through a side door to the theater!
Everyone else was dressed up. We were in jeans and T shirts, but we walked right into the premier. Brad and Angelina even walked right by us. (Stick figures)
We took our seats, and enjoyed the movie. (It's a good movie.)
After the movie, we started to head out of the theater to go home, and were guided out the front door which left us right on the red carpet. Again, we were in jeans and T shirts, and we were now walking down the red carpet with all the fancy people. Fans were still there snapping pictures of the red carpet and, well, of us!
When we got to the end of the red carpet, the fancy people were being led into the after party. We obviously didn't have invitations so we just kept walking to the end of the block and turned the corner onto Highland.
Laughter ensued.
We got home around 10pm, still in a bit of a cloud about what our evening was like.
This morning it was back to work, back to the reality of my less glamorous but equally cool job, back to preparing for my reactions.
We may not be fancy, but somehow good fortune follows us, and Dmuff and I always find ourselves creating unique memories in our crazy home in Hollywood.

Period.
