So this being my first real blog I guess I will talk about what I do for work. If anybody reads this hopefully it wont be a big deal but may satisfy some curiosity. Its rather annoying when I go out and people ask what do I do and I reply you really want to know? The answer I usually give is I burn dead people and more often then not people are shocked. However I have given my close friends tours of the crematory. They have seen the bones and sometimes cant believe that a 170 lb person ends up being 7 lbs of ash/cremains once we grind the bones up. I never thought I would end up in this business but that is another story.
Right now for this past week the grim reaper has given us a break, its a bit slow so I can continue studying for my funeral directors test. As for how we cremate well it is basically a big oven, we have two. The oven (retort) will settle in at 1750 degrees and once we verify the paperwork and confirm the identification we weigh the body and put it on a loader. From there it is placed in front of the oven door and shot in like loading a torpedo. We quickly close the door and monitor the flame making sure the temperature doesnt take off. The usual cremation takes about 100 minutes depending on weight.
I enjoy my job and have many stories, all usually gross or gruesome but morbidly funny in some way if your into that. If anyone reads this I can post some of those stories in the future. For now Im enjoying the site and thats a pleasant escape when your 38 and starting to feel your age.
