Wow look at that two posts in one week, so far so good I suppose. And just like last time its going to be a review, but unlike last time it will be a review of a movie instead of a concert. So lets get on with it
So again I went to see Star Trek with my father (first time on opening weekend with two friends and my father, and this time my father and grandfather) who like me is of some sorts a Trekkie. Yes we like Star Wars for what it was (and we dont mention that prequel bull shit that raped our childhoods) but we prefer Star Trek as a whole, the movies were a bit better for how corny they were and the TV shows were for the most part great (with the exception of the show Enterprise that Scott Bakula was in). With that out of the way lets get in to the movie it self.
The story line may cause problems with other Trekkies because of the alternate universe thing that they did, but with me I thought it was a great way to revive the series. They pretty much just wiped the slate clean and took a different approach, and unlike other prequels that have dawned our generation, this one had good writing behind it so I wasnt offended by it. Secondly the acting was quite good, Eric Bana (Nero) is one of our younger actors (even thou hes 41 currently I still consider him to be a young actor) that has the potential to be a great actor much like Laim Neesom, Ian Holms, and Anthony Hopkins. Further more Simon Pegg (Scotty) and Anton Yelchin (Chekov) added a delightful bit of comedy to this action packed film that was truly needed.
Some might say that Zachery Quinto did not do a very good part as Spock but I had no issue with his acting, he may not have been as logical as Leonard Nimoy was before him but I was glad to see Spock struggle with his human side more then the previous shows and movies. To be truthful it always seem to bother me that Spock was seen as a half breed but acted more like a Vulcan then a Human until now, when you have two different races that control their emotions in different ways it is only natural to see conflict if said races were to join, and that was apparent in this version.
I also enjoyed the little things that they added to please the Trekkies in this film like the red suit in away missions always dies and the score additions as well, they played to my geek senses with out it being over the top. Really it just worked well with in the story line and its not like they threw everything out and started anew.
Last I wanted to say that even in this action packed movie they had different elements that made it a well rounded movie, as I had stated before there was a bit of comedy in the film and the beginning pulls at my heart strings every time I watch it. That opening really hits a cord with me, not because I have lost my father in a great battle but the idea of not knowing your father (who by the way just gave his life to save numerous people including your mother and yourself) just makes me so sad because of the relationship that I have with my father and grandfather. In fact I would probably fall apart when they die and that day seems to get closer and closer, but Ill save that bit for another post when more is known.
Until then Live long and prosper
