I volunteer in two local government positions and have built my business around serving an underserved sector and improving neighborhoods that otherwise wouldn't have access to my level of expertise. Any individual may be more or less rational, and that can change from moment to moment, but as a species? We're no more rational than any other. So if we want rational results it's up to each of us as an individual to not just pull our own weight, but also some extra on the assumption that some of our neighbors can't or won't. That's only rational. There are of course larger factors - governments, corporations, cultures - but even every one of those starts with us as individuals, so unless you're doing that hard work yourself, all the rest of it might as well be just an excuse even if you don't mean it that way.
