As some of you may already know, I'm a physicist. That being told, the geeky fact I brought you is obviously Physics-related.
Have you ever wondered why things underwater seem a little different?
That's because of one the properties of light... refraction. It occurs when light waves change speed and direction when passing from one medium to another (air and water in this case).
The light goes from the bottom of the sea (like in my picture below) or the pool, through the water, then it goes through the air, reaching our eyes.
Each medium has something called refraction indices and the differences in these indices of two materials determine the directional changes when light goes from one medium to the other. That's why things in the pool seem to be shallower than they really are.
Isn't physics just fascinating?
