Another item from this last weekend....my boy showed me a scrap book about his great uncle who was a pilot in WWII. He made it all the way through the war...but died during a test piloting run in England after.
The book is HUGE. It is a collection of all letters written by and about his uncle regarding the war. It starts with his call to action papers, letters from his college (he was a football player at Notre Dame) buddies and professors wishing him well and a safe return. It continues with letters written by him throughout his term...talking about the first train ride down to Florida for duty, his group, his trip to Europe, daily life, thoughts on the war, etc.
The last 1/4 of the book begins with a telegram from the Airforce telling of his death and the subsequent letters regarding the details and the remorse from people in his company. After that there are dozens of letters to his mother and father from family members (including his brother) and friends with condolences and what they thought of him as a person.
I was crying SO much! It was such an in-depth look at his life and how people thought of him. It was REALLY moving! I just felt like sharing that with you.
