Chapter 2: A mother's cry
My mother left us when I was just a baby. My father told me never to harbor any ill-will against her because she did what was best, and one day I would understand. Today would be that day.
"When did I become a vampire? I don't remember it happening." I looked up at Allister who was stroking my hair and then at my father across the table.
"You are not just a vampire." Allister said. "You are a rare breed. Your mother was a vampire but your father is not." Allister went to the kitchen window and drew the blinds.
"So, I'm half human and half vampire?" I asked trying to make sense of it all.
"Yes. Which is why you are able to age like a human but live without certain things like your heart." Allister pulled back his sleeve and studied his watch.
"Enough questions for now. You must sleep. Your father will go about his business and will wake us in the evening." Allister gave a nod to my father, who got up from his chair and walked over to me.
"My dear. You must do whatever Allister tells you to do when you wake up. I have done all that I can to keep you safe but now you must learn to care for yourself." With that, my father kissed me on the top of the head and turned to leave. I jumped from my chair but the sudden rush of movement made me dizzy. My father turned with a jerk and caught me on the way down to the floor. He lifted me up into his arms and carried me back to my room. I felt drowsy and the last thing I saw before falling asleep was my father;s loving face as he laid me in my bed and pulled the covers up to my chin.
My mother stood at the foot of my bed. I sat up and gasped.
"Mom?" I rubbed my eyes to make sure it wasn't a mirage.
"Christie, you must listen to me and tell Allister everything I am about to tell you. I cannot communicate to him because I am too weak. You are apart of me and so I can talk to you even this close to death." Her voice wavered."The skulls have me. That is how they found you. I don't know what they have done to me to get information but they did. They are starving me. I need you to come to me as soon as you can. I will not live much longer."
"Where are you?" I asked without hesitation.
"There is a warehouse on the east end of town, near dock 333. You must come tonight". She faded from sight and I knew she was gone.
I woke up with a start, sitting straight up in bed. Outside the sun was nearly done setting.
"Dad!" I yelled out.
My father came running into the room.
"Are you okay?" He asked me, trying to catch his breath.
"Get me Allister. They have mom. I know where they are."

I almost want this to be a script for a comic. Damn, if I could only draw!
