Just started watching the TV series Breaking Bad on suggestion from Ronya. I have to say its not a show for everyone. There is humor, but what humor there is is extremely dark. Ive watched five episodes so far and the main character consistently descends further and further into violence and deception. Theres plenty of humor in the situation that cant possibly get worse gets worse variety, and the main character does an excellent job of playing the ordinary guy caught in extraordinary circumstances and forced to make impossible choices.
But it is dark. It starts dark and gets darker. While I enjoy the art of it, and the characterizations are brilliant, the story is a little hard to take in all at once. Its one of those shows that actually needs to be taken in at one episode a week, which I shall now be doing from now on. I will reserve this show for those nights where I have enough time to throw in a comedy afterward. I definitely dont want to be going to sleep with the show being the last thing I see.
So I followed the three episodes with a single viewing of Sahara and one and a half viewings of The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy. Bill Nighy is oddly comforting as Slatibartfast. I think thats enough pallet clearing to provide me with an uneventful nights sleep.
Speaking of uneventful nights sleeping I have an appointment on Thursday to check out some CPAP machines. I cant remember what the mneumonic stands for but its the common machine used to conteract the effects of sleep apnea.
Part of me hopes it will work, but part of me is worried that it will. Id much rather be cured or treated with the dental apliance that sets your jaw forward but those cost $700 up front and you cant rent one to try it out. The CPAP machine costs about $150 to $200 to rent so you can try it out. Unfortunately if it proves useful itll cost about $2500.00 to actually buy. If it doesnt work theres no real indication that a dental appliance would be of any better benefit. Honestly I have no idea how theyd ever arrive at the decision to try a dental appliance.
Anyway, Ill probably pick one up on Thursday but Im going to wait until Friday to try it out. If I get a terrible nights sleep at least Ill be able to nap my way through Saturday. Besides, I dont need any more challenges at work.
Weve lost the divine Miss M as she has finally left to go on her mission. People who know me know that I have no love for religion, and the Mormon religion itself leaves a bad taste in my psyche. I dont begrudge her the chance to go on her mission, however, because I do feel young people need to travel. I only hope she isnt segregated so completely that she doesnt get to experience the city shes stationed in.
In the meantime weve had to hire a couple of new people. The pace at work has been frantic these past two months. Christmas sales really didnt taper off much until the end of February. As an example, on the second Monday in December we breached the previous record for most packages shipped by sending out 98 in one day. Truly a record breaking Christmas. Then, in January, we pulled a Monday with 100 packages sent out. In Feburary we had a Tuesday with 104. It wasnt until this week, ironically the very week in which we lost Miss M, that order levels have actually diminished to realistic levels.
With all this business, and already being slightly short handed, the bosses have been hard pressed to find time to even post ads for Miss Ms position. Add to that the loss of our programmer and the still unfulfilled need of a graphic designer and the past two weeks have been a continuous queue of interviewees. It has also been a few weeks of ten plus hour workdays. And its not about to end any time soon.
We have two new employees starting up just as we need to act on plans for upcoming Maker Fairs across North America. The business isnt likely to ease up until perhaps July, or late September. Then well be prepping for Christmas again.
So, yeah, no shortage of hours. Its a good thing I like my job.
This has resulted in my deep desire for alcohol on weekends, though. I think Friday night pubs might become a regular occurrence.
As a side note Im trying to figure out how to wrangle a motorcycle ride down to San Francisco for the first Maker Faire in May. That being said, if the weather continues to be colder than usual I may not even be able to ride my motorcycle until June anyway.
On top of all that I also want to start looking for a condo to move into in the summer.
I may start drinking alone at home just to save time.
