OK. None of you are ever allowed to listen to any self-righteous bull-shit propaganda I spit at you ever again...
I recently got an email telling me I'd been shortlisted for a technical writing position with the open-source company Red Hat. I wasn't going to let this be known until I knew which way it was going to come out. I've made a decision and now I know.
The email informed me that I'd made the shortlist and that the next phase in the process was to conduct a phone interview. From India. It asked me to reply with a time for the interview which suited me, bearing in mind the time difference in India.
I'm not going to respond.
Interviews have never been my strong suit; I look better on paper - I'm a writer, that's what I'm good at, putting things on paper. Also, I'm not very good on the telephone. I challenge anyone who reads this to stop and think if I've ever contacted them by phone, and if so, was the conversation any longer than thirty seconds? It's just not my thing.
I now also work nights, on an ad hoc basis, with no set roster, making it almost impossible for me to schedule an appropriate time for this interview to take place.
So, I'm letting my first opportunity to write professionally (although I have had paid writing work in the past) pass me by. Because I suck.
So next time I leave some empowering and sympathetic comment on your blog, feel free to tell me to pull my head in because apparently I can't step up when I need to.
