Hello lovelies.
Sorry it's been so long since my last update (because I know you all just hang on my every word, right?!) Life's been pretty full lately, both online and in the real world, but now it's time for a catch-up.
This is going to be quite a long post; I'll bold key words so you can skim it.
In the real world I'm apartment/cat-sitting for a friend, Zoe, who's in LA for work until January. It's a sweet pad down by the river in Teneriffe. I'm loving living here so much I'm pretty sure I'm going to try and keep a place of my own once this gig ends, even if it means shacking up in a caravan or something (I've done the caravan thing before and quite liked it., despite being nearly evicted for...ahem...noise complaints).
It's also crunch time at Uni. My major piece of assessment is due in in just over a week. It's a 10 000 word creative work and it's supposed to be the capstone of the degree; you complete it and then you graduate. Unfortunately, after I took a semester off in my first year and underloaded some later semesters, I still have six units to make up. So it's back to Uni for another year once this unit is over. Luckily it'll only be three units per semester, and they're mostly electives and first year units, so I'm not expecting much of a challenge.
Work is a pain in the ass. I'm a three-day a week casual but for the days I'm there my direct boss is having to use me as a leading-hand, since the company is too cheap to hire him a new one after his last one quit about six moths ago. This pisses me off becuase I'm having to shoulder the resposibilities of a leading-hand without any of the benefits. I'm on a similar hourly rate as a leading-hand would be, being a casual, but I don't get any holiday or sick pay benefits. I also can't even take advantage of being a 'casual' and not going in when I don't want to. On the days I work, my boss relies on me to close down the building and if I'm not there, he has to do three hours overtime and do it himself, which I just can't make him do (I actually really like my boss). In short, my company is ass-raping my boss and the workplace trickle-down effect means he's having to lube me up pretty good too.
My 'love' life is going reasonably well. I'm dating quite a bit (although not right now, being in assignmemt lockdown - tonight's Butterfly Effect gig with Kye being the only exception). I've been fortunate enough to meet some really amazing ladies lately, and I'm loving spending time with them. There's nothing serious on the horizon, though, because, honestly, I just don't have the time for another major commitment in my life at the moment. Here's hoping I don't meet the love of my life anytime soon, I wouldn't know what to do with her!
Online, I'm maintaining two blogs; this one and one about my house-sitting exploits (which I've linked to in a previous post) and I'm about to launch a third; a collection of articles about crazy clever ideas I've discovered over the years (I'll link to it once its up and running). I'm also keeping an active Twitter account (@RookSuicide for anyone using Twitter) and have plans to launch another one soon, posting links to cool people/places/things I've found that don't quite make the cut for the new blog.
My newest geek obsession is the new Toshiba nb100 netbook (or 'mini-notebook', or 'sub-notebook', or whatever else people are calling the tiny laptops these days.) It's tailor made for me, being Toshiba, which is my preferred brand and coming with Ubuntu Linux factory installed! OH YeeHAW! The icing on the cake is that the nb100 addresses my one major concern about buying a netbook; keyboard size. Toshiba have pulled out all the stops, using all the available real-estate to include a nearly full-sized key layout, and, as a result, the keyboard on the nb100 is only about a centimetre (or less) shorter than a standard 'board. And the fucking thing is gorgeous to boot! I can't wait to have one of my very own. There's no word yet on when they'll be released in Oz, but they're already out in the UK and Japan, and, I'm assuming, will hit the US shortly; just in time for Zoe to pick one up for me while she's over there!
Today I have a meeting with my tutor about my assignment. This is the very last feedback I'll be getting before it goes in, and, seeing as how this is a 36 credit-point unit (most units are worth 12cp) there's a lot riding on how it scores. I've changed the tone of the work since it was last peer-critiqued and I'm in the middle of a complete rewrite into the new voice. It's a bit of a gamble changing something do radically so close to the deadline, there's no chance to fix it if it's not working, but my gut is telling me it's the right choice. Fingers crossed.
After the meeting I'm going to deposit my long-held tax refund cheque then I think I'll visit a few electronics departments and do a little nerdsturbation with any netbooks I find. I'm also seriously considering picking up a Bluetooth transmitter/headphones combo for my Gigabeat so I can keep it safely tucked away in my bag and still use it. It hasn't been quite the same since it was dropped onto the road during the recent Pirates and Ninjas party. :-(
Later, I'm meeting the ever-fabulous kye for dinner at the Pancake Manor, which is always a treat, then taking her to pop her Butterfly Effect cherry at the Tivoli.
S'gonna be a pretty fucking good day.
Ciao!

How much longer do you have with uni? I'm slowly getting used to the idea that I won't be a student at the end of the month. I'll check out your blogs when I'm done with project1 crits though.
I had a lovely night, although enjoyed Sleep Parade more than The Butterfly Effect. Alas.
And bacon. Everything should come with a side order of bacon.
