I IMed my buddy who's got his autoresponse on and left him this entire message verbatim before realizing it would basically make a good journal entry, so here it is.
Heh heh, horrible day today.
I was going to drive home from lunch and turned the ignition, but my truck wouldn't shift out of park.
So I'm like, FUCK, and go to turn it off, and it won't turn off.
After 20 minutes of fighting with it, it somehow turns off. I found that if I turned the shifter while it's off, i could shift in into DRIVE, so I did and started the car and went back to work.
After work, I go to do the same and it won't shift. I turn it on like an idiot and it won't shift past reverse.
I go to turn it off again and it won't shut off.
I try and try to turn it, and it just won't turn off this time.
So I call my father, who's on the clock at the Convention Center, just before my office closes and tell him I need help. He says he has to unload a truck before he can leave, but he'll be there.
I wait TWO HOURS in 100 degree heat without access to phone, bathroom or water, next to my truck which is idling in the parking lot, while contemplating dropping out of school and commiting suicide.
I mean, this shit DOES NOT HAPPEN TO PEOPLE. I MEAN, NOT BEING ABLE TO GET OUT OF PARK AND YOU CAN'T TURN YOUR CAR OFF?! WHO THE FUCK HAS TO DEAL WITH THAT SHIT?
He shows up and somehow gets the shifter to work, but cannot get the key out. We decide to drive it back to my house and see what to do from there.
He gets a pair of pliers (I'm already saying OH SHIT) and pulls out the key... bent at the halfway point. Since he's a Filipino genius, he PUTS IT BACK IN THE IGNITION and starts the truck, turns it off, then can't get it out. He pulls it out and it breaks.
I have to call a locksmith, and my father says, "You have the money to pay him?" It's going to run 200 plus. I go... um, maybe, and my dad is out the door a second later.
Locksmith shows up and gets right to work. His encouraging words after inspecting the key in lock for 1/2 seconds: "Oh yeah, forget it."
He has to re-do the whole ignition column. 200 dollars. Oh look, the ignition cylinder is cracked with wear. That's another 30 dollars.
I'm wondering if I have the money to pay this dude. As he tells me "C.O.D., pal." my sister pulls up.
She has money, I bargain with her and she agrees to loan me 200 dollars. I tell Mr Locksmith to hold up for 10 minutes while we go to the ATM to get money so I don't get stabbed after saying, "Um, I don't have 230 dollars."
We get the money and pay the Locksmith and he's gone and my truck now works fine and everybody's happy. Thus endeth the shittiest day I have had in a while.
Elaine at Border's apparently had a similar situation a while back, where she had to pick up her brother's car from impound at 2 am after he got arrested.
His car would not shut off. And she was in an empty parking lot at 2 am. She had to drive his car home, leave HER car there and leave the car running at her parents' house. Funny, probably not at the time, but funny
All this after MEGA-DRAMA at the cabinet company after the CSR Surpervisor fired a CSR for leaving to go take her daughter to the hospital because she was having a miscarriage. Yeah, THAT went over real well.
That was my day. I must be going. I shall talk to you soon. G'night.
