So I seem to be doing everything but writing my thesis, so I thought why not put a new entry in my SG blog that I haven't updated in forever?
Lots has been happening since I last wrote here: I almost certainly will be going back to McGill for my PhD, which will be in Human Genetics. I went on a trip to Montreal recently to meet up with potential PIs for grad school. I am not exactly modest in general, especially when it comes to my brains/school. But I would NEVER have imagined that things would work out so well. So I met up with 3 amazing supervisors, all of whom are Ivy-league educated for their post-docs, and extremely successful and influential publishing machines at McGill. All 3 of them are very interested in having me work with them. Two of them are affiliated with one of McGill's hospitals, which is fantastic. It would help a lot if I wanted to get into the 18-month training I need to do after my PhD to become a geneticist. Another piece of great news is that two of them told me I don't have to do an MD to become a geneticist; a PhD in Human Genetics would suffice!
So one of the profs is flying me back to Mtl on the 22nd of this month to meet the lab crew. The other prof wants me to give her an answer this Monday, so I am guessing she will give me an answer shortly as well. The third prof will find out about funding in April. But basically I am very confident that I will get an offer from either one of the two ladies affiliated with the hospital in the next two weeks or so! I could not have hoped for better. They are all incredible, but I am especially impressed with one of them: she is one of the co-founders of the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists, the director of a hospital and four other things, and the CEO of a biotech company. She is the one I am most likely to get the first offer from! She is basically the most powerful person in the department by a longshot, and world-renowned! I am uber excited!
Anyway, enough of that, it's not done yet. But hey, I suffered through 4 years of extreme poverty to be allowed just a shot at this, so I have the right to be stoked, right? Of course.
In other, unrelated news, after playing Catherine on the ps3, I decided to pick up two other games by Atlus for the ps2, Persona 3 and Persona 4. I will just say this right out: Persona 3 is the best video game in all of gaming's history. I simply can't stop playing. It's preventing me from writing my thesis and a fuckton of other things I should be doing. Even when I am not playing it, I am listening to the Persona 3 soundtrack on grooveshark because I just can't stop thinking about it....okay Patty, just one more month and then you get a break, so calm down!
Anyway, I shall update this as soon as I get a positive response from one of the amazing PIs I met up with!
Cheers!
Patty
