So yesterday I attended a free preview screening of the movie I've been longing for--"Serenity"! For those of you who don't know "Serenity" is the big damn movie of the short lived series "Firefly" which was created by Joss Whedon, mastermind behind Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel. The show lasted less than one season on Fox but due to great reviews and incredible DVD sales Universal allowed Joss to make a movie about the characters. There's a lot of fans of the show and it has a big cult following and when it opens on September 30th everyone hopes it will do well with those who aren't familiar with the 'verse.
There's not much to say about the plot of the movie without giving away things that are kinda important. What I can say is that when we start out we are given a brief intro to the universe and a kind of summary of where in time we are and why things are how they are for non-Firefly fans out there. We are then shot into a sequence too good to give away before we join our Big Damn Heros on board Serenity, well not all our heros. Sadly for the first half of the movie Inara and Book are both missing. Those of you who have never seen an episode won't realize your missing anything if not for the mentions of Inara's leaving. Basically our heros are out to do commit a robbery and "be bad guys". After that you'll have to see the movie to find out. I can tell you that the movie centers mainly around River and her story.
Now being a fan of the series and being a Joss fan in general I'm going to be a little biased as to what I have to say, but I speaketh the truth. I didn't like that the nature of the film format left us wanting on sub-plots and on a lot of story involving other characters. That would be my major complaint, but it has nothing to do with this movie, its just not something that would be possible unless you wanted a 10 hour movie. There's a lot in the movie that I think some fans will take issue with. A lot happens and nothing is sacred. I personally think this is great but others will not. Nothing felt forced and every explaination seemed to work well both within the movie and series. There's a lot of action, comedy, and tons of drama. If anything can be said about this movie its that its bold. Its characters are bold, its script is bold, and its cinematography is bold. The movie is a kind of Star Wars told from Han Solo's POV but with more substance and edge. There's a lot to get and will be a much better movie if you are already familiar with the background so I suggest anyone who hasn't already goes out and rents "Firefly" on DVD. Then run out on Sept. 30th and see "Serenity". You will not be disappointed. If you like sci-fi, if you like horror, if you like love stories, if you like drama, if you like action, or if you like comedy you will be pleased.
So even impartially I give this movie a 9.5/10
