I wish I knew someone who could teach me more about Jazz. There is a jazz station here that just drives me crazy. The DJs are big pompous pricks who have been listening to jazz since birth, and could pick out specific horn players by only hearing a few notes in an ensemble . . . they talk in a secret language called "you're not cool enough to get this little man."
The music absolutely blows my mind though. Driving home last night they were playing this CD. It was very minimal, just piano and rhythm. The rhythm was constant and it would change very slightly every few bars. The piano acted like it was working completely independently of the rhythm, but in perfect unity. It had a cocky personality and it was flirting with the drums as a bird would flirt with the ground, coming close and then pulling back at the last second.
It's the same thing that attracted me to artists like Daniel Bell, Ritchie Hawtin and The Modornist. The naked simplicity in a constant stream. Subtle melody in a string of soulless ones and zeros. I guess that has absolutely nothing to do with what I said about Jazz . . . but fuck it, it makes sense to me.
