I find myself upset and irritated recently about our nation continuing to fight a war in Afghanistan and not ending the occupation of Iraq. Obama ran on the idea that he was against entering Iraq in an invasion that we had the audacity to call "shock and awe". Getting in as president, he has not pulled the troups out, ending the occupation of the country, but has left 50,000 troops to "finish up the work there". Nonsense. I just don't believe people who say we just can't leave Iraq just like that. Of course we can. We can turn it over to the UN, who can then work on helping this poor country rebuild and find some stability after all the turmoil and destruction we have brought to them.
As for Afghanistan, the Taliban never attacked the United States. They have, at times, allie themselves with Osama Bin Laden, then, at other times, not. It is a very tribal situation. And we can't just go powering around the world attacking evil wherever we find it. The rest of the world isn't exactly beating a path to join us in our holy mission there. But economic interests and the need to control large areas of the world drive the foreign policy of our country. I am just sick of hearing that Obama has been doing such great things for this couintry when he's not paying attention to life and death.
Whew! Maybe that's heavy writing for this site. But I just cannot avoid what is so important to all of us--learning to live together as brothers and sisters in one world together.
