AHHHH, Hurricane Rita......

So what do I do? My family, who lives in a semi-well off suburb of Houston, is thinking they may leave...I live in an apartment complex, right smack in the middle of town...Do I leave, or do I stay? All the roads leaving town are completely blocked...I mean its gridlock traffic everywhich way you go....I heard reports on the news about people who were evacuating Houston, and had only gone like 4 or 5 miles in 3 hours.....So what's the point? I mean, get stuck in traffic for hours on end, only to get....nowhere? I mean, all the hotels in surrounding areas are booked up, believe me, I've tried to make reservations.....Nowhere....
Another thing to consider...Property damage...I mean, if it happens, and I leave town, only to have my apt. ravaged by this bitch Rita, what happens when it takes me days and days to get back into town, due to weather/closed roads/traffic etc....My place would either just get more destroyed, or worse yet, looted for everything in it!
I'm most up in the air, because I just don't know how bad this hurricane is going to be by the time it gets to me....I mean, I've heard that its going to "destroy Houston", but I've also heard that it will only be like a schedule 2 or 3 by the time it gets to me....Now if thats the case, why leave? I mean, sure, I'll probably lose power for several days, and that will suck, but I'd rather be in my own place w/ out power, then stuck in my car, with nowhere to stay...I dunno, half the people I talk to are leaving, and act like I'm nuts when I say I'm considering staying, but the other half think that everyone is just overreacting because of the Katrina disaster...Now Houston and New Orleans are built very differently....
Shit....I dunno what to do....I mean, I would hate to get outta town, only to be stuck in my car for the next week or so, but I would also hate to be stuck in my apartment re-living the Wizard of Oz....I dunno....what do you think? Should I stay and risk being on the road for the next 24 hours straight, with nowhere to stay after I get whereever I'm going? Or should I tough it out, buy water and candles and vienna sausages and tape my windows and pray to the Lord Jesus who I love, to keep me and my doggie safe? I ask you....What should I do?

As you might imagine, being in FL we've had a few hurricanes. It's a tough call to stay or leave. That is a strong storm though, very strong. If you have a place to go, go. Take your doggy too (of course, that goes without saying).

Good luck, keep us posted smile

katrina was only a major disaster because New Orleans (hereafter referred to as Atlantis) was built BELOW SEA LEVEL. i'm thinkin Houston is far enough inland that you wont have to worry about the storm surge and whatnot, so flooding would mainly come from rain, and strong winds will be the main damaging aspect.

my advice is to definately find somewhere else to stay, at least for a few days. power will be out for an undermined amount of time in houston, no doubt about that, and being stuck in blistering heat with no ac, no way to keep water cool, and no way to cook food aside from campfire style... it'll be rather miserable. try taking roads that arent interstates/highways out of town, because most idiots dont even consider the fact that interstates/highways are not the only roads that lead out of the city, so it should be rather smooth sailing.

oh, and i find it rather unlikely that Rita will lose strength before landfall. be safe!
