So sadly one of the babies didn't make it. It wasn't doing well, not enough milk in its tummy, so I set it up to get more frm mom by taking most of the other babies away and letting the tiny one and another feed together. Seemed to be doing better but yesterday I went to check on them and found :GROSS PART COMING HERE: some parts. Makes me hate the crazy mom rat more than before but it's what some animals do when a baby isn't making it. She's actually a very good rat mom.
She was from a pet store and was a feeder. She was never really socialized so doesn't like people but I saved her and the babies so the store wouldn't get them.
The store was breeding her (most likely to her brother) because she was the first female from all of the other litters that survived. The original mom isn't having babies anymore so she was next in line to pump out feeders.
I managed to talk the young kid there into selling her to me. Now they have no way to breed more rats...at least for now.
Anyways, she bites. HARD! The second time she bit me I had a baby in each hand so couldn't get out of the way. She grabbed my finger and ground her teeth in until I heard crunching. I managed to put one of the babies into my pouch (sweatshirt pouch...not like kangaroo pouch) and tap her on the nose to let go. Blood just streamed out. Yay.
After managing to get the babies settled in my shirt and clean off the finger and wrap it I came back in to find the mom "dancing" in the little puddle of blood I left. She's evil...so very evil. That's one of the few things I love about her.
Well I've rambled and written a big enough posting. I hope you are all doing well and if anyone wants some baby rats let me know. Two boys and two girls.
Take care all.
