Although I'm still saddened to think about the thousands of people who lost their lives two years ago, it saddens me even more that in such a short amount of time we have squandered the sympathy of literally the entire world. Looking at those photos, it's hard to deny that September 11th could have been a huge turning point for everyone, but it wasn't. Instead, the Bush administration reacted to senseless violence with more senseless violence. To me, the biggest insult to those who were murdered is that their deaths didn't compel our leaders to stop and question themselves.
For the duration of my lifetime, I doubt Ill ever witness the degree of worldwide unity displayed in those photos. But if it happens again, I have a sneaking suspicion that its cause may be unbearable.
