i have to say from my experience that it depends. i've had the case where it's worked out and we are still really good friends tho no longer involved in that way, i've had the case where post-sexual relationship is no relationship at all, and i've had the friendship that i would never take there because i can tell it would be detrimental to the friendship in the long run. it really just depends on the personalities and how both people see it and feel about it. if even one person, you or they, gets too emotionally involved, then it's a sink or swim type thing and the propensity for damage is greater. that's the risk you take, but it's not impossible.
