♥ Have you checked out my new set 'Wreck' yet? It was shot by Lavonne in April 07, just days before I left Canada. I think it is a really great set and I hope it goes live.
♥ Uproot and I are sponsoring kids through Plan USA. We got our first letter last week! It was so exciting opening it and seeing the little pictures the girl had drawn. The letter came from his sponsor child, a 10 year old girl in Benin. Mine is a 9 year old girl in Paraguay. It is so cool to know that something we are doing has a directly positive effect on someone else's life.
♥ I think working as a nanny has made me a mega-softy. I teared up at a commercial for something about Canada last week (see, I can't even remember what it was! It had the northern lights in it...) and again at this video today...sometimes the world is so unbelievably beautiful. I don't know why people are so shitty to eachother. I wish everyone could think before they act and consider how their actions will affect others. No need to be deliberately rude and thoughtless!
♥ okay, so it is obvious that I am a huge mush-bot today. I don't know what's up. Sometimes I just get overwhelmed when I think about how many people (including me sometimes) spend their time being mean to people or feeling sorry for themselves when really it's a wonder to be alive, and to have our bodies run smoothly like clocks, to inhabit such an amazing world.
This is super cheeseball, but these Weakerthans lyrics (from My Favourite Chords) really say it nicely: 'It's here in the smallest bones, the feet and the inner-ear./It's such an enormous thing to walk and to listen.' Sometimes I try to comprehend how our bodies move and how beautiful it is that we breathe and the air sustains us and all of the other wonders on the planet and I just end up dazed and smiling.
♥ Amazing sea creature, example one:
Blue dragon nudibranch! They are pretty small, like 2 inches long, and they swim upsidedown (see the second photo), using the surface tension in the water to hold them to the surface, or some crazy shit like that.
♥ Amazing sea creature, example two:
How fucking underrated are narwhals? The answer: VERY. I used to love them when I was little, then I kind of forgot about their amazingness until last weekend when Uproot and I were sitting at the beach discussing things that are awesome. As soon as we got home I looked them up but they are pretty sneaky; I guess not a whole lot is known about them. They live in the Arctic Ocean, so memo to everyone: Stop being assholes about climate change! I saw this commercial the other day about how awesome DOW Chemicals is (?!) and in it a paid flunky chemist or whatever was saying how important it is to discuss 'the possibility of' climate change. I hate that corporate spin bullshit.
(this drawing is super cute)
♥ WHAT THE FUCK, it sounds like someone has been hammering on the side of the dumpster closest my house, for like 10 minutes. There are not even any homeless people in my neighbourhood! It is 8.30 am!!
♥ Canadian music corner!
The Polaris prize shortlist has been announced! It's a $20,000 prize given by the CBC to awesome indie bands. I like most of the bands on the list so I don't know who to root for.
Plants And Animals (Parc Avenue)
Basia Bulat (Oh My Darling)
Two Hours Traffic (Little Jabs)
Stars (In Our Bedroom After the War)
Shad (The Old Prince)
Kathleen Edwards (Asking for Flowers)
The Weakerthans (Reunion Tour)
Caribou (Andorra)
Black Mountain (In the Future)
Holy F*ck (LP)
So, I guess I will post a Basia Bulat video today! She is so amazing. I think she is kind of the next Feist, only she was in a VW commercial instead of an Apple one. My awesome friend Jenanne sent me a mix cd early this year with a song by Basia on it and so I was hooked! Listen to more of her!
♥ Be good to eachother today! Think before you get mad. Consider how your actions affect the world around you! <3<3<3
Anyway, hope you are doing well!
