♥oh my gosh! I have had quite the adventure since my last post. Me and my girl Irinka headed up to Long Beach this weekend to go to Ink & Iron. She had planned to get some work done (her nipples pierced) but the piercer there was SO skeevy, so she just ended up people watching. I did get some work done, by Ryan Mason of Scapegoat (Portland, OR). Now we have no more road trips to look forward to (so far) and I'm kind of bummed.
Here's the ship!!
About to set off. I was trying to fortify myself by gobbling fig newtons. And then I made a mess trying to open one of those capri sun type juices. WHY are they so hard to put a straw into?!
Irinka was so nice--I couldn't see my leg so she took a photo to show me the progress!
And--the finished product. I am so happy with it. This tattoo has a huge amount of meaning to me. It also covered up my first tattoo, which was a small blue swirl I got on my calf when I was 19. The cupcake was already there--because of the coverup and a small skin infection I had going, the placement kind of had to be so close to my cupcake.
Also, isn't the linoleum in my kitchen beautiful? We're going to try and fix that before we sell this place..I think a small thing like that could really impact the price!
♥ reading: still that super-boring Canadian history book. I may not finish it. I love reading history, but this isn't engaging at all. It's all jumbledy. It keeps going back and forth and not explaining shit. I have also been reading The Long Valley by my boyfriend John Steinbeck. It's pretty good and I think I am going to cruise through it instead of forcing myself to slog through the Canadian one.
♥ Canadian Music! YAY.
My Kali tattoo was inspired in a large part by the song 'Praise' by Kinnie Starr. I have my favourite lyrics from it in the display beside my profile photo. When I was 18 and in a shitty place in my life, that was my feel-good song and I would put it on and dance around my little crappy first apartment. But, since I can't find it on youtube, I will put a different Kinnie Starr song.
I had a really cool experience with Kinnie Starr in 2004. I was at a concert of hers (the Scrappy Bitch Tour, with her, Oh Susanna and Veda Hille, both of whom I love) and it was in a really tiny venue, the Liberty Lounge in Calgary. Tables were set up and I was near the front. I was so absorbed in the music and the experience I think I was kind of just gaping--I was definitely not swaying and smiling and head-bobbing and all that! They had an intermission, and during it I was walking back from the merch table and I bumped into Kinnie Starr! She asked me if I was having fun and I said yes I was enjoying it so very much, I'd waited a couple years to see her and I was having a lot of fun. I guess I looked like I'd been drug there or something...anyway, after the intermission, she looked my way and smiled a couple times and I made sure to liven it up and not look so introspective. The concert was really great so it was not a stretch to look like I was enjoying it.
Kinnie's music has such a positive message. Listening it to it is really uplifting. Her style now is a bit more polished and smooth but I think I kind of prefer her earlier stuff. Here's one of her earlier songs! I used to bop around to this on the way to work for my dad in the summer of 2003 (when I first listened to Praise; what an odd period of my life! I was so awkward, trying to figure out how to be grown up and on my own. I was 18, newly single, and had lived on my own for a year. I don't really know what else to say about that point--it was so strange and everything felt new to me. I felt so free!)
♥ I'm knitting a baby blanket for my friends Wendy and Brian who are having a baby in a few months. It is taking me FOREVER. I'm using varigated yarn, so that kind of cuts down on the time, but I had no idea how long a blanket would take. It's been at least 20h so far and I'm a little less than half through. I'm more than happy to do it, it's a pleasure to make something for their baby, but geez, it's a bit more of a time sink than I'd anticipated.
♥ I haven't been to the beach in weeks! I hope a chance comes up soon. I love laying out on the beach. I know it's so bad, but I won't get to do it as much when we're in Vancouver, so I'm taking my chance now.
♥ my mom's coming to visit again in about a month; I think she might want another tattoo, so we may have to chat with _mike_!
♥ Here is something mildly embarrassing about me. I love the comic strip For Better or For Worse. If uproot ever catches me reading it on my RSS feeds, he teases me mercilessly. It's a good comic though so all you haters can keep your traps shut.
