♥ another fast update before work! And I am trying to eat breakfast (everything bagel with marg, glass of water) at the same time! Can Rin multitask efficiently? We'll see.
♥ Still no Arizona photos. Poop! I do have photos of the quick jaunt Irinka and I made to LA last week to go to an SG party.

It was super fun! I am so happy we had the chance to go. We met a tonne of rad girls. And this weekend is Ink & Iron so I hope we will meet more SGs!
♥ Current read: I kind of gave up on the Mongol book; it was way too long and dry. I did about half of it and it was super overdue at the library so I just returned it. Now I'm working on a kind of patchy 'Short History of Canada'. It doesn't even have anything about the Northwest Rebellion/Louis Riel being put to trial and executed! I think that is a pretty gross oversight. Also, it hasn't had really anything about the Seven Years' War (French and Indian War to you Yanks) and that was a pretty important war to Canada so maybe examining the lead-up and events of it wouldn't be such a bad idea. I am just going to keep reading, though, because I'll probably pick up some things I forgot/didn't know to begin with, and then later I'll look for a better history to read later. Does anyone have any recommendations?
♥ I am happy to be Canadian and to be moving back to Canada, but it is SOOOO hard to be living in the U.S. and immersed in all the politics and not be able to participate by voting. I take voting pretty seriously and even if I had gotten my green card, I still wouldn't be able to vote for years, which is kind of frustrating. Anyway, I can't wait to go back to Canada because then I can participate in the democratic process, which I think kind of works better there than here. I should just drop the subject now, because I could go into a huge ramble but I have to get dressed and walk the dog and all that stuff, I can't just sit on the computer jabbering about politics and political processes all morning.
♥ Canadian music corner!
The Weakerthans! They are truly titans of the Canadian indie scene. I first heard of them in 2001. I used to be addicted to my late-night Saturday radio shows: Radio Sonic and Radio Escapade on CBC Radio 2. I was getting out of mainstream music and discovering these awesome indie shows really showed me the light. I would hover by my tape deck for the whole show and record songs whose intros sounded promising and later try to catch the song name to write down. In this way, I got introduced to the Weakerthans, the Thermals, Kings of Convenience, the Softies, Of Montreal and a tonne of other awesome bands. I bought a shitty walkman so I could listen to this stuff as I walked around my hometown. It ate batteries and had a play life of something like four hours before the music would slow down and sound monstrous (remember analog music?). So, here's the first Weakerthans song I ever heard and the one that truly got me hooked.
As for the Weakerthans: I love them, they are awesome, and I think I have seen them live four times or maybe five. They are so great live, and I have been very lucky to see them at some tiny venues. I even got to meet John K Sampson at the Calgary Folk Fest in 2004, so that was pretty rad. I even almost got into a fight at one of their shows (during Pamphleteer, I believe!) because this drunk girl was trying to push her way to the front and started slamming into everyone and being an ass and stealing people's hats to try and make them let her through. I talked shit at her and she tried to fight me! Oh, the heady days of 2003.
This song just kills me. It makes me think of being 16 and scumming around my shitty little hometown. It always made me dream of huge things and started me on the path to where I am now! It was my first indie infatuation. Listen to the lyrics! Then you will understand why I swooned so hard. I've always been a bit romancey, so you can understand why this might absolutely slay me:
I don't know what I should do
with my hands when I talk to you
You don't know where you should look
so you look at my hands
♥ multitasking update: I finished breakfast before it got cold. Yay!
