There are certain books that I read repeatedly over the years, books that exist as lighthouses to me on the often foggy waters of creation. If it were up to me I'd leave them in drawers in every hotel I visited for other travelers to happenstance across, become absorbed in, and moronically smile.

Hey SG-land, I'm not on here much, but like to stop by once in a while and let y'all know what I'm up to photographically.

The first portrait is the actor James Cosmo (most known recently as the Captain of the Night's Watch in Game of Thrones). I was asked to take this portrait at a film screening of a monologue by James, called 'The...

Hey SG-Land,

I'm really interested to hear from photographers and models on here what works for them to get the best out of a shoot?

I was working with someone yesterday who I perceived as shy (doesn't mean she is, just how I perceived her), and so before the shoot met for tea and biscotti that was so hard I thought I'd break a tooth...

Was lovely to meet and work with @lucerne this week, she's such a sweet-heart! :)

There's a great retro furniture shop called Red Eyed Dove where one can find all sorts of interesting things, including a dynamic stuffed duck. These are my two favourite from the shoot.

I've been getting into landscape collage and am working on large (1m square) pieces containing 20-30 images each. David Hockney calls this "drawing with the camera" - as you have to create space, depth, distance, and time - and so I've been getting out there with my pencils and creating triptcyhs and quadtychs too.

If y'all want to keep in touch on Twitter (I post

As some of you that have been following my blog series have noticed I'm inspired very much by Richard Avedon. I recently worked with a couple and used a translucent white background to give a beautiful soft back-light and then engaged with the sitters on a person level. This brought out a very genuine feeling to the images.

nice light and yes, really nice relaxed expressions you've caught

"Well, I usually shoot heroin and drink champagne," Stone said, and she headed off to the dressing room to figure out her hair.

I asked Avedon to decode Stone's performance so far. "Everything she said was in the hope of being quoted," he said. "The name-dropping was very smart. My portrait of John Ford. Chess with Art Buchwald. They're professional charm-workers . . . She...
