Hello, beautiful people.
This week, my Blog Homework is about the video games I am currently playing.
Recently, I've gotten back into BattleTech on the PC.
Based on the tabletop game from the eighties, the PC version is a turn-based tactical strategy game.
The setting is the 31st century and five Great Houses - Davion, Steiner, Marik, Kurita and Liao are constantly at war with one another.
The player is tasked with running their own mercenary company of BattleMechs - think giant walking tanks - and pilots.
There is a story-driven campaign, but I have the most fun in the career mode which starts you in a random section of space with random 'Mechs and pilots.
Then you start accepting contracts such as escort missions, destroy base missions, defense missions, assassination missions and straight up battles.
This is a game that rewards patience and knowing how to make use of the terrain.
For example, I put my fire support unit behind a hill and, using another unit as a spotter, I can rain long range missiles on the other side.
Or I use a jump capable 'Mech to get behind the other guy and shoot him in the back.
Of course, the AI can do the same thing.
The other aspects of the game include managing your company finances - go broke and it's game over, upgrading your ship and expanding your company by hiring and training new pilots.
