I never liked zoos. Not sure why. Never seen one where the animals looked particularly happy, if it's even possible for animals to portray those emotions to people.

I've been a big, big fan of Mike Allred's work since I picked up MADMAN COMICS back at Don Parker's Records and Comics in Milford, Ohio in my early high school days. There was always a spiritual aspect to his work in some form or another, usually a Christ-like figure in the form of Frank Einstein or in the pages of Red Rocket 7. I...

"The Rocket Man," written by Phillip Klapperich and directed by Nathan Allen. At the House Theatre.

It's really good live theatre. I wrote about it over here. If you're in Chicago between now and the end of June, try to check it out.

I went to Michigan this weekend. I hadn't been out of the city since x-mas, and dude, I needed it. I stayed on a farm with cows and trees and vines to swing from, near a store that sold vittles and used books. There was a lake nearby and I slept in bunk beds and listened to a friend play the guitar at night. I...

dear lord, i need that...to get out of the city.

have your heard of sufjan stevens? he has an album about michigan. supposedly, he's going to make an album about every state. but it's really nice (thinks i). kinda folky, will oldham style a bit mixed with the sea and cake. maybe you know what i am referring to, maybe not. anyway, it provides nice musical accompaniment to thoughts about michigan.

Russ Kick is the author of Everything You Know Is Wrong: The Disinformation Guide to Secrets and Lies, and several other books. He also runs the very, very good website, The Memory Hole.

Kick carries many news stories that don't show up on CNN or the NY Times, and a few that do--he published the photos of Iraqi soldiers being humiliated and mistreated and...

So, I just saw the Breakfast Club for the first time. Yeah yeah, I can't really get it for all it's worth now because the characters have become such cliches--but I do appreciate them as symbols. It was an interesting, if predictable, flick. But I don't get the name--is it a reference to something that I just don't recognize?

The rest of the world has...

Enough of the loving. Let's get back to hating and despising things.

Is anyone else hypnotized by this AIDS/porn industry/Darren James business? Warren Ellis calls it "pornpocalypse." The California Department of Health wants to stop the performers from, er, coming into contact with semen. I'm not a porn guy (um), in general, but all of this is really fascinating.

Springtime equals open windows and breezes and people in skirts and fair-colored clothes, and outside sounds and blinds being up and other people's apartments. It means finding excuses to be outside and my oh my oh my it's pleasant.

I need to follow suit. There are things growing in there that have yet to be given scientific name.

I love spring when it smells like rotting cherries in the morning and it's only 38 degrees. I love spring when the tulip stalks are up, but not the flowers. I love spring when that 70 degree day comes but you can still wear your favorite sweater. I love spring for all the same reasons I love every other season: change.

Oh, Journal. I abuse you so.

Things I'm working on now:

-A two-person one act play called Ghost Mom.

-A Gogol parody that's kind of funny, and is also about someone's mom. I got to refer to someone's "cooter." If I work in the word "boner" I'll be really happy.

-A screenplay rewrite called "Devils" that we're filming this summer.

-A new comic book idea....
