Day One:
I arrive at the office at 8:25am slightly panicked because I wanted to be 15 minutes early on my first day, (our office opens at 8:30am). Well, I am the first one in. The office is empty. Like not a soul. Around 8:32 the accounting secretary walks in. She greets me and says she'll try to page my new boss, Laurie. OH, she's not in yet.
Around 8:35 the Receptionist shows up, "Why are you here so early? Laurie doesn't show up until 9 at the earliest. Hahaha" I pace a bit and laugh. The 3 of us talk about the Bills game and the beautiful morning today. Some people start filing in around 8:55am. In comes Laurie, a very well-kept woman, short blonde hair, probably early 50's, reminds me a bit of Meryl Streep. She apologizes for being late and motions me to follow her.
She gives me a tour of the plant, (which I had already taken with the VP the week before). We get back to the office around 9:45am. I am ushered into my new office which is across from the row of offices with windows. FUCK. Stupid unemployed guy that started last week got the last office with a window. I'm across from him. He's 50, short, squat, balding with a combover. He's a former sales executive with Mars Candy who was laid off a year or so ago. Lots of used car salesmanship. He doesn't seem to fit.
We walk over to the "creative" offices down the hall. Meet the VP of Game development. Hipster dude, about my age, maybe a bit younger. Big, goofy, hipster glasses. Walk in and meet some graphic artists and other game designer folk. More hipster dudes, a couple of hot hipster chicks. Average age I think is about 33-34? I think this is going to be a really great place to work. Casual isn't the word...
About lunchtime now, so my new boss took the sales staff out to lunch. Solid 90 minutes. Then we went checking stores. First Target, then Wal-Mart, then Joann Fabrics, then Michaels, and ended at ToysRus. Organized our games and puzzles, checked SKUs, photographed displays. All the major chains have the same product mix throughout the USA. You sell at their HQ and they place your product in every store. Pretty sweet if you can book it....
Got back to the office around 4:30pm. Almost time to go home. I hung around for about an hour looking at catalogs, and listening to my boss talk about how hard it was to get into Wal-Mart.
So, today, I basically did nothing. Tomorrow, I play games. Woop Woop.
BOOK IT.
