Well, it's been a bit since vacation, and in that time work has once again become the dictator of my free time. This job may soon be a distant memory. I'm very tired of the bullshit.
and to make matters worse, I came home to find my place has been robbed. That's right, folks, my house got violated by a stranger. So far I have discovered only one thing missing, but it is the newest thing I have - a 42" plasma tv. I had resisted and resisted the urge to get a big tv for fear of giving in to the materialistic. But after a year and six months, the desire overcame me and I bought it just under 6 weeks ago. Now it is gone, just an expensive memory that I still must pay off in several monthly payments to avoid finance charges. Sonofabitch!!!
I did a little detective work after the police left my place and discovered just how it all went down. First and foremost, my own trusting nature and neglience played a huge part. There is only me and one person downstairs living in this quad (like a big house divided into four apartments). I had to go out of town for work this week, and on my way out I left my patio door unlocked, like I have done almost since day one, because it only leads to the backporch. The backdoor into the house is always locked, even when I just run to the store for a moment. But what I forgot to do was lock my windows. I had them open the other day, taking advantage of the nice weather. I pulled them down, but just left the locks undone for some reason. That had to be the point of entry, because no other signs of forceable entry were anywhere. I found small handprints on the window ledge, which led me to examine things closer. Then I could tell the screen was put on backwards. So in through the window they came. I saw small footprints on the carpet and an armprint on my velvet bedspread, which was too small to have been made by me. After looking to see what else they stole, I noticed one small footprint by the closet door. Opening the closet, I looked around, not really seeing anything out of place. Then I looked up. I have an access panel into the attic of the house in there, and sure enough, they climbed through it into the vacant apartment next door. All the front doors open into a common foyer, so they had to have taken the tv out the front. They left everything else alone. I mean everything (as far as I can tell). They didn't things right out in plain sight: my camera, palm pilot, computer, stereo, booze, mail, nothing. And the other funny thing is they didn't even look for other things. Nothing was knocked over or broken, overturned or out of place, drawers are still intact with all the items inside.
I highly doubt I'll ever see it again; they even took the remote. But now I feel a bit unsafe about leaving. They could come back for seconds, and this time wipe me out. fuck. I guess I'll just have to be more cautious and live with it.
