Yesterday, a turbulent storm blew through town, ripping leaves and small branches from trees and dumping cold spring rain on everything. Apparently it knocked out power in the vicinity of work. As I was leaving, I didn't notice this fact until I was ensnared in the middle of traffic. People creeped along, navigating several 4-way intersections without the aid of traffic lights. Slowly the rain became less and less; I rolled down the window to enjoy the cool breeze. Now for the enterrainment. In the two lanes of opposing traffic, a mere five feet from me, an unmarked police car pulls up beside some guy who has his windows rolled down as well. The guy is reaching around in a bag sitting in the passenger seat, the officer glances over at him. Suddenly the officer rolls down his window and yells out, "Hey! I hope that's not a beer you're opening!" Imagine, trapped in traffic with nowhere to go, a cop sitting right next to you, and you've just cracked open a beer. You can't hide it and you can't just drive off. Unfortunately, I didn't get to witness how this story ends. Although we crept along, we were still moving, so I missed the conclusion. At least it wasn't me.
