Oh, I wouldn't go so far as "avoiding overt acts of affection", but, for instance, if Rob suddenly started calling me every day, having flowers and chocolates sent to me, and sending me a bunch of cute little emails, I'd think something seriously fucked up was going on. Like, if he suddenly did a 180 and was going out of his way to be sweet, you know? If he just got a bit sweeter, and called you know, ever, heh heh, or sent some email, or even got me a present, that'd be one thing, but if it seemed like a massive life change, where he was really going all out, I'd be more confused than touched. In fact, small acts of affection once in awhile are totally awesome, even more so when they're so rare. It's sort of a problematic thing, where of course girls want guys to be mushy, romantic, etc, but if they do it all the time, then it's no good. Never is no good either - this is an important point. But it's all about balance. You really ought to read A Certain Chemistry, it deals with all this stuff quite nicely, and is incredibly funny as well.
By the way, when you do get that package, the letter in it, the word that I spend half a page trying to remember is assimilate. Heh heh. Man, that was bugging me for ages.
