It's late... I'm tired... but I want to get another blog in--quite a bit happening!
Dismal hope for my community... I rode the bus to work this morning, and one of our future leaders (yes, a high school student) was on a non-stop chat rant. She wasn't talking to ME, but she had the volume up enough to make sure everyone else could hear her...
"...so I got yelled at last night. My parents yell at me for dating an older man, but they don't care about people doing drugs or getting knocked up. You know so-and-so and so-and-so and all them? I'm surprised they're not all knocked up already, or doing cocaine... so-and-so uses X, you know... you know who I really hate? I hate those Mexican girls who speak Spanish around me and think I don't know what they're saying... and there's that black kid who thinks he can have any girl he wants even though he can't... oh, and there's so-and-so who just won't shut up, and I told her brother that if he didn't shut his sister up, I was going to punch her in the face! And he got all mad and started stuttering, you know how he does when he gets mad?"
"Well, he stutters even when he isn't mad..."
"Yeah, but when he's mad he stutters even more and it's really funny! I mean, he's just this little stereotypical Asian kid--as if he could beat me up--he says he doesn't care if I'm a girl, if I touch his sister, he's going to hit me... I could beat him up! It was really funny!"
WOW. I'm surprised she didn't get to gays and Muslims... oh, and never mind that the guy she was talking to was Asian himself...
SOME hope for our community... when Chatty Cathy finally got off the bus, there was a HUGE sigh of relief.
Hope for the world?
Near the end of last year, I told you about the passing of the King of Spanish Horror--my late, great friend Paul Naschy. Here's something I didn't mention at the time... quite some time ago, he himself invited me (via Facebook) to a group known as "Nosotros Los Escritores Noveles" (We, the Young Writers). Though my Spanish depends an awful lot on Google Translate, I worked out that this was a writer's group based in Spain that was collecting stories for a charity project (cancer was eventually decided on as our mutual cause). Apparently, Senor Naschy thought enough of me to invite me to join the group as he knew I was a writer... I had no idea at the time that I was pretty much the only American (or non-Spaniard) invited--and in any case, I was DEFINITELY the only English-language contributor.
My contribution was a tribute piece that I had written to commemorate the passing of Forrest J Ackerman (he of "Famous Monsters of Filmland" magazine and the best friend of "monster kids" like me around the world). I submitted it in English and Spanish... and over the ensuing year, I quite lost track of the group and its doings--especially after the passing of Senor Naschy himself.
But what should appear only yesterday? The final project, RELATOS, has now been published on-line. And true enough--mine is the only English-language story in the book. Not only that, but the editors took my original manuscript and enhanced the hell out of it--made it even stronger than before (to my absolute approval). And in retrospect, as Senor Naschy succumbed to the very disease for which we were raising awareness, I see now that my story (which, of course, wasn't meant for him) stands equally well as a tribute to "El Hombre Lobo" himself. I sincerely hope that my Spanish-speaking friends will look at the rest of this book and help clue me in as to the rest of the contents?
For the record, my story appears on page 96.
RELATOS
Please let me know what you think.

And don't forget... coming soon to MR...
You'll see Cadavre's best pictures soon enough... but guess who gets to see her for REAL?
