A foot of snow? Jesus Christ! If we get a couple of inches over here, everything grinds to a standstill. I think we could learn a thing or two from you guys.
My family lives in Co. Clare on the West coast of Ireland (where they used to film Father Ted) and it is beautiful in a rugged, slightly bleak sort of way. You can see the Atlantic ocean from my Nana's house.
Because it is so beautiful, many tourists and Irish city people have bought holiday houses, which has caused the price of land and property to soar. it's getting to the stage where people can not afford to live in the villages in which they were born and raised. The land-developers really are ruthless.
I hope your friends enjoy living there. The pace of life is much slower in the rural West, so it's generally a great place to get some peace.
