Hey gang, i saw Watchmen today, loved it. Absolutely loved it.
Below is my review, cross-posted from my Facebook page.
"Watchmen"
*****
"A hugely ambitious movie, more layered and more touched with genuine vision than so much other popcorn fare out there.
As a renowned piece of comic folklore, the graphic novel this film sprung from in many ways redefined the industry standard-something this movie could not replicate, for that to happen this movie would have to be released in the mid 80's as well. Hollywood wasn't ready to commodify sophisticated concepts about society expressed through comic books back then-they are now.
This is the picture of a dark society mired in compromise on every level, personified best by the Comedian, who in his narrative death dominates the entire personality of this piece. This is the picture of a brutal world which just kept voting for Nixon. This is a sick world aware that is sick. The weakest part of the movie is then perhaps in the character of Nite Owl and the way he is supposed to be positioned as a force for hope-he dresses as Batman, yet his sentiments to the end are as cloying as anything Clark Kent has ever uttered. He comes across as childish in a story not really built for children.
The visuals in this movie are quite beautiful; it is bursting with energy and a rampant ambition that is impossible to ignore or not give due credit to. But is not just flash and sparkle. The side stories spiral around the somewhat tepid murder-mystery which drives the plot forward, adding a dense layer of complexity to proceedings. This is a fully realized world and adds to the richness of the piece. My mind roamed around the world created, lingering well past the final frame.
The heart of this movie is not really one of platitudes and promises of hope while saluting the flag-but rather quite bleak and cynical-the villain of the piece humanity and human nature itself, the masked heroes both the mirror and the inevitable reaction to our failures, our mistakes, our dirty wars, our dirty crimes."
Anybody else seen it and has a reaction??
