2 weeks ago, I bought the Friday the 13th collection on blu-ray as an impulse buy, so I have been working my way through all of the movies. I really liked the first four. The first one is so different with the mystery element to it. Jason feels scary in those first 3 movies in which he is the killer. I think the only thing that really bothered me was they all have the exact same structure, opening with a flashback/recap and ending with a dream sequence. I'm not sure it would have bothered me so much if I wasn't binge watching them, but I didn't really want to see a 10 minute recap of a movie I literally just watched. I think part 5 is when they start to be wildly varying movies in terms of tone and quality. Part 5 brings back that mystery element, and it has some good points. The acting really sticks out to me in that one especially the guy that took over the part of Tommy Jarvis. I liked Part 6 more for it was trying to do than what it is. It has some meta jokes and some horror comedy leanings. I think if they had fully committed to that that would have been a cool change. Part 7 is the worst Friday the 13th movie. I think there is a worse movie in the series (i.e. Jason goes to Hell), but this one does everything that these movies do the worst. I always expect to see victims that are not true characters but broad stereotypes. This one doesn't even have that except for the one mean girl. I can't distinguish any of these characters. They are purely cannon fodder, so everything that happens to them has absolutely no impact. Moving on to Part 8, it is okay. It's got some good stuff. If you can get past the fact that the subtitle Jason takes Manahattan is almost a lie because he is almost never there, it is okay. Now moving to the worst one, Jason goes to Hell. This movie is not a Friday the 13th movies. Jason is in it for like 10 minutes maybe. Now, he has a sister, and only a family member can truly kill him. What? Why? The retconning in this movie is out of control. It is a body jumping serial killer movie, and it does that terribly. Just not a good movie. Don't watch it unless you are like me and trying to justify a $100 collectors set purchase. Jason X is okay. Those CGI effects have aged horribly, but I like that they incorporated some sci fi elements. They truly committed to trying something different, and they are at least partially successful. I haven't watched Freddy vs. Jason yet. I'm not sure what to think about it. All and all, I glad I bought these movies. There are some I won't watch again unless someone else just really has to watch them with me. I just had to write down all my thoughts because I think my friends are tired of hearing about it.
