I just saw a cinema sin video yesterday about the problems with modern horror. They were totally spot on with their points, but I felt like they could have addressed some additional things.
1. Let's kill found footage: it was ok at first, but every other thing now is made like this. It just looks horrible, and it is easy to cover up for a lack of filmmaking ability. It is just a gimmick. Please let it go!
2. No more remakes, reboots, or sequels: you could probably say this about any genre now, but horror has always been the worst offender. Just make something new. I know that is easy for me to say, but maybe we could get something great.
3. Make characters people actually care about: If you care about the characters, it magnifies the experience. You will feel it when something happens to a character you like versus nameless cannon fodder.
When horror movies are done the right way, they can be really amazing. I just wish I could see that more.
