I've reached a point in my life where I cant help but hear a song without estimating its potential candidacy for some unborn perfect mix cd. Its not always conscious. A war between enjoying albums start-to-finish (which I wholeheartedly believe in) and picking songs out of context for place in a personal arrangement goes on somewhere in my head. I am obsessive about mix cds. I have made so many, and been satisfied with few of them. Each demands careful consideration and spontaneous impulse in equal measure. Done well, they are the arms of a friend. They are a phone call from far away. They are love letters. And they are subtle creatures.

I do that subconsciously as well. Although the quality I'm listening for is whether it would be a good song to exercise to, as the music at the gym is routinely sucky and uninspiring.
