Well, the jazz program is well underway. So far, it's been going pretty well, but part of that can be attributed to the fact I'm still "ahead" in theory and ear training. Once I'm supposed to be hearing minor-sharp 11 chords and crap, things will get harder.
The drummer dude giving me my private lessons is so stereotypical as to be hilarious. He's a roughly 60-year old guy who's about as bitter and cynical -- but yet somehow ironically cheerful -- as it gets. At the end of my lesson on Tuesday he ranted to me for about 20 minutes on the economics of overpopulation -- there is so much supply of people that the demand is going down and we're all worthless. It was both despairingly true and hilarious. He's also about as traditionalist as it gets. If the music is amplified, it's crap. If it wasn't written before 1960, it's crap. If it's not real jazz, it's crap. I keep my musical influences to myself.
Oh, and the guy can drum like a motherfucker. It's kind of tragic though because he's wrecked his back and hardly plays anymore.
I can kind of see myself being this guy in 35 years.

Has that old-timer gotten around to teaching you the Moeller technique yet?
It's also a little -- well, a lot -- more delicate than my "beating the hell out of things" rock upbringing.
