Do you want to know how Londoners get rid of their rubbish? The building next door to ours has been under construction since we moved in here (yes, it's been extremely noisy and we are going out of our minds). The contractors gutted the building back in August and threw all of the cabinets, dry wall, floorboards, etc. into our joint back "yard." They have been adding to this pile for months. As the project finally comes to a close, they decided to light this giant construction pile on fire causing huge black clouds of nauseating fumes to pour into our flat (do you honestly think that we have quality windows that seal?) The fire department arrives and I expected the construction workers to have to put the fire out and dispose of the rubbish in a more environmentally safe manner. No, the firemen laughed that they were called out for a controlled fire and left the scene within 5 minutes. Yep. Burning old gutted out building rubbish is perfectly fine over here. Oh, EPA I miss you.
