I just heard back from a local group (Pittsburgh Organizing Group) who went to Miami for the FTAA protests. Here's what they said:

Please take a moment to read the below message about the events in Miami.
While everyone from Pittsburgh avoided arrest many were not so lucky.
After reading the below we are asking that you call or email our congressional Representative Mike Doyle...

I've got one hell of a cold. I sound like one of those women who've been smoking since birth...ooh....sexy. I'm cooking a huge vegan feast today for family dinner #1. Now I get to endure comments like "oh, this turkey is sooo good. too bad you can't eat it" (smirk), and "oh, that's cute you made your own little meal!" Hope everybody has a good...

grooverider:
your family's into it?!?

you must have SOME powers of persuasion...

then again, you did say 'dinner #1', so i assume they'll get their meat-fix somewhere else.

so- what are you making?
rebecca:
Ya, my family's way into it. I started doing this four years ago, so now it's kind of expected. They think since it's vegan it's automatically "healthy," so they stuff themselves even more. Dinner #1 was for the boyfriend's family, and I made seitan vegetable roast in a roasted pumpkin, gravy, stuffed mushrooms, chocolate chip bars with chocolate sauce, bread, and corn. Nothing too fancy. For my parents I'm going all out, and making my own fake turkey, and stuffing, and gravy, garlic mashed potatoes with ports and spinach, two other dishes I haven't decided on, a shit load of cakes and pies, and bread...The only thing my mom makes is the turkey because my dad will have a coniption without it. But he still eats tofu and the rest of it happily.

Ugh...going out to look for a job today. It's so humiliating...half the jobs I'm not qualified for, as you need a master's, and the other ones I'm over-qualified for...I don't know what I was thinking when I picked my major. Ugh...dread... puke

one that'll pay the bills, basically. I'm this close to dancing...I just don't think I can do that yet. I was a social work major...trying to fight the good fight. Ha. I'll probably just go apply at the coop.
sloane1:
almost everyone I know who majored in social work went back to school (grad or law), because A) the pay sucks B) it is hard sucking work C) it's demoralizing, so many bad people, so many bad crimes D) few jobs. It sucks, because more social workers are so needed.

I just got back into town. NYC fucking kicked ass. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I ate at Kate's Joint and Caravan of Dreams often...both of which were kinda pricey, but fuck it. I had two of the best meals of my life this weekend. I also came back with renewed inspiration for my own cooking, so I'm more than ready to get in...

it's always depressing to go to NYC in the winter and see all the skanky ladies in fur coats. last time I was there, I had a no fur button prominantly displayed on my coat. It ain't much, but at least I felt better.

what do i read???? um, just about everything. not too big on the whole 'book club' rage stuff...i like political satire, i'm real picky about biographies. right now, i'm reading some sedaris. he's really funny. i like books that make me think. i'm going to pickup that Teenage Libertarian Handbook. that sounds to be about my tempo.
i recommend:
serious-anti-semite and jew, sartre-the possibilty of altruism, thomas nagel-the end of education, neil postman- anthem, ayn rand
interesting-electroboy, andy behrman-the secret history, donna tartt- live from New York, forget who wrote it
entertaining-the rose and the beast, francesca lia block-jenny and the jaws of life, don't remember the author-a heartbreaking work of staggering genius, dave eggers- skipping christmas, (don't laugh) john grisham

We leave for NYC tomorrow morning. We were going to fly out today, but decided against it. From what I hear there are plenty of vegan eateries (including a vegan pizza place, thank christ) and I know Lush is right down the street from where we're staying. And I will be seeing Stella live Saturday night...being in the same room with Michael Ian Black might...

Okay, I figured out how to get a smaller pic up here. Figures I'm eating a tomato in it. Sweet. The Grand Buffet show was fucking unbelievable...and they played candy bars, so it's finally out of my head. Gil Manterra's Party Dream played too, which just added to the lunacy of the night. There were some pubes set on fire, and a gold g-string...Anyways, it's...

I just signed up for the site a few days ago. Unfortunately, I can't start my journal off with a bang, as I'm busy applying to a pantload of grad schools and haven't really left the house in a week. I think I'm going to the yarn store in Squirrel Hill to get some new knitting needles...maybe go sell enough cds to get money for...
